What happens if you work somewhere without a respectful workplace? If you feel a lack of respect it usually prevents you from making suggestions for fear of ridicule or being ignored. You feel less connected to the organization and coworkers which increases turnover and engagement. Defensiveness kicks in followed by turf wars and lack of trust. Doesn’t sound like a very pleasant place to be!
So how do you build a respectful workplace? Here are a few tips to consider:
- Model Respectful Behavior: Managers can “walk the talk” by showing respect in every interaction. Practice listening skills giving everyone your full attention. A “please” and “thank you” go a long way too.
- Get to Know Your Employee’s Strengths: To build more effective relationships with employees, take the time to get to know their strengths and preferences. Encourage employees to use their unique strengths when organizing work assignments.
- Encourage Cross Communication: To create a better appreciation of the challenges of others, encourage communication about goals and priorities between departments. Create opportunities for employees to interact in order to develop an understanding of each other’s preferred work styles.
- Provide Training: Training workshops provide valuable techniques towards building a respectful workplace. Training can include listening skills, resolving conflict, understanding different personality styles, etc.
