DEI and DiSC sound like alphabet soup!  What do all these letters mean, and what do they have in common?

DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) is a term used to describe policies and programs that promote the representation and participation of different groups of individuals, including people of different ages, races and ethnicities, abilities and disabilities, genders, religions, cultures and sexual orientations. DEI also covers people with diverse backgrounds, experiences, skills and expertise. It has been estimated that all Fortune 100 companies have made a commitment to DEI. Further definitions:

  • Diversity: When people from all different backgrounds come together
  • Equity: Fair, just, and equal access to opportunities in practices and policies
  • Inclusion: All employees are and feel respected, have a sense of belonging and are able to participate and achieve their potential
“Diversity is a fact, but inclusion is a choice we make every day. As leaders, we have to put out the message that we embrace and not just tolerate diversity.” ~Nellie Borrero (Managing Director, Senior Strategic Advisor – Global Inclusion & Diversity at Accenture)

What is the connection between DEI and DiSC?  DiSC embraces diversity of thought which is one outcome of successful inclusion efforts.  The model describes four basic styles: D (dominance), i (influence), S(steadiness) and C (conscientiousness).  By taking the assessment and using the DiSC model in their everyday work environment, team members have the opportunity to begin to value inclusion by:

  1. Understanding how their style’s priorities, motivators, and stress triggers are the same as well as different from their team members
  2. Appreciating that they are a member of a diverse team with various viewpoints
  3. Respecting the strengths and contributions of each of their team members and having the opportunity to learn from everyone
  4. Tailoring communication and interaction based on the preferences of their team members
  5. Identifying strategies to make more meaningful connections with team members of various styles in order to work more effectively together, solve problems, and contribute positively to their organizations
“Diversity of thought stimulates innovation, creates learning opportunities and actively demonstrates respect.” ~ Talent Management
