Maybe you’ve heard this statement from managers who have worked in their positions for 5, 10 or 15+ years: “I know everything I need to know about leadership and management.” What do you think?  Do you really know everything about being a manager after you have spent many years in the job?  Effective managers see their years of experience as continuous learning building blocks that they can apply to new situations and current conditions.

“Never become so much of an expert that you stop gaining expertise. View life as a continuous learning experience.” ~ Denis Waitley, motivational speaker

Organizations are always evolving. Think about the recent events of rapidly changing technology, virtual teams, and leading a culturally diverse workforce.  Although the functions of management (coaching, staffing, measuring results, developing, etc.)  may be the same, it’s how the tasks are performed that may be completely different. What you know today may be outdated tomorrow.

It’s time to apply a continuous learning strategy

  • Create a Learning Culture: When the management team is a role model for continuous learning, others will follow. Have managers regularly share newly acquired knowledge with their team members.
  • Include learning goals in your performance evaluation process. Evaluations tend to be past focused, by including learning goals you begin to focus on how the future can improve performance.
  • Implement Social Learning: Provide the management team time to interact, discuss and collaborate on newly acquired knowledge and skills. Social learning increases engagement and best practice sharing.

Managers need to be innovative, and adapt their management techniques quickly in the dynamic environment of today. These leaders will be the ones who are best prepared to take their teams and organizations to the next level.

“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” ~ John F. Kennedy

The Management Map workshop can be lead in-house creating the opportunity to customize the program with company specific policies, procedures, and values. The benefits of social learning is realized when every manager attends the same training. http://managementskillsinc.com/products/management-map/
