Are you working on your training budget? Since budgets are still pretty tight for many organizations, it is especially important to spend your training dollars wisely and stay away from “nice to do” training. An effective training plan targets specific training needs that make a difference for your organization.

The first step is to conduct a training needs analysis, which is basically a gap analysis, to identify critical training topics. This is the WHAT of your training plan. Here are a few questions to ask in a three level training needs analysis:

  • Organization Level: What skills will be needed to be prepared for the future? What skill training would improve key organizational success metrics?
  • Position Level: Which positions require annual certification training? What positions require annual compliance training? What positions need a “makeover” requiring new skills?
  • Individual Level: What training needs were identified on individual performance appraisals? What training do your high potential employees need for the future?

The answers to the questions you ask during your analysis will establish training topic priorities to place on a schedule; this is the WHEN of your training plan. The old axiom “what gets planned gets done” definitely applies to training. By scheduling your training throughout the year, avoiding peak business periods, you will ensure your plan is implemented

The next step is the WHO of your training plan. The WHO is the training participants for each training topic planned. Another important WHO is the person delivering the training. This can be an outside resource or an internal subject matter expert.

“There is nothing training cannot do. Nothing is above its reach. It can turn bad morals to good; it can destroy bad principles and recreate good ones; it can lift men to angelship.”
~ Mark Twain

Once you have your training plan, Management Skills Resource can assist you in delivering critical topics or providing training material for your delivery.
