You walk into a room and see a game on the TV. What are your first questions?…

Would you ask: 1) Who is playing? and 2) What is the score? And if it’s a game you’ve never seen before, how is it played?

Three critical factors must be present for a high degree of employee motivation and satisfaction: meaningfulness of work, responsibility and knowledge of results. How do you create this environment? Help your employees Keep Score!

Here are a few tips for helping to keep score within your organization:

  • Who is Playing – Employees need to feel part of the team and how they make a contribution. Retention improves when people feel they are an essential part of the team. People need to know and understand their co-worker’s strengths and interests. How else will they know when and to whom to throw the ball?
  • What is the Score – A critical managerial task is to make the organization’s vision, mission, goals and objectives come alive for their employees. Asking your employees to create their own measure of success will lead to commitment and not just compliance. Employees are able to judge their own work against jointly created, measurable standards and focus their energy on the most important things.
  • How Do I Play – Employees need to know the rules, policies, procedures and standards to play the game. They need training and coaching to build a culture of continuous improvement.

“The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them..”
