Procrastination: To put off doing something, to postpone or delay needlessly.

What have you been putting off? That big project? Finally completing that degree? Starting that exercise program? Completing the quarterly newsletter? (mine!)

Is procrastination powerful? Yes! When procrastination grabs us it uses its power to prevent us from achieving our goals or getting what we want out of life. It has the power to prevent timely decision making, starting or completing an important project or making us feel less successful.

Regardless of when or why you procrastinate, here are few useful tips to break free from its power:

  • Create a Plan: Does your task seem overwhelming especially with everything else you need to do? Start by brainstorming every thing that needs to be done. Pick a target date to finish and create a timeline with all tasks.
  • Take Small Bites: Now, just take a “bite” out of your project instead swallowing it whole. Pick one thing you can quickly do and before you know it, all those small bites will add up to the whole.
  • Find an Accountability Partner: Provide your plan to someone who will hold you accountable. Set follow up dates to communicate regularly with your partner. You are more likely to get things done if you commit to others.
  • Reward Yourself: Do you procrastinate on unpleasant items? Why not create a reward for yourself when you accomplish your task? Golf, Shopping, Vacation etc.

Why not make up your mind now to break the power procrastination has on you for 2006?
