Are you ready to embrace the future challenges of your position or would you prefer to stay in the familiar? Is fear of the unknown holding you back from implementing new concepts that would benefit your organization?  It takes courage to speak up, make an unpopular decision, or lead change.  Courage does not mean you are fearless. Courage is doing something despite your fears.

“Courage is not the absence of fear but rather the judgement that something else is more important.” ~ Ambrose Redmoon, writer

Trying anything new takes courage—a new relationship, going back to school, starting a family, changing careerss, speaking up at a meeting, starting your own business, etc.  Do have the courage to reinvent your role and take on the challenges for the future?  As the Cowardly Lion says “If I only had the nerve!”

Here are a few tips:

  • Create a VisionYou get to decide where you want to go and what you want to change.  Ask yourself “What would I do if I wasn’t afraid?”  Commit to a vision and purpose and focus all energy on achieving it.
  • Review Strengths – Everyone has been in situations that required courage.  Ask yourself, “What have I tried new in my past that took courage?” Think about the skills and strengths that made you successful and tell yourself “I did this before; I can do it again.”
  • Expect Good Results – Positive thinking is a mental attitude in which you expect good and favorable results. Negative thinking is a process where people tend to find the worst in everything, or focus on the worst possible scenarios.
  • Identify fears – Remember, courage is
Courage is doing something despite your fears. Make a list of the fears that are holding you back from the changes you would like to make.  The more afraid you feel about something you’ve written, the greater benefit you’ll receive by calling it out and doing it.
  • Take One Step – It’s difficult to have courage when the task or change seems insurmountable.  Focus on taking one step today and another tomorrow, creating milestones along the way, until you build up momentum to reach your goals.   Even if takes thousands of small brave steps, it all starts with the first one.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by those you did.” ~ Mark Twain
