You probably find yourself a member of multiple teams these days…many of them might be virtual teams.  But how much does teamwork really matter in 2020?

“I like the people I work with. Someday, I’ll meet them in person.” ~ author unknown

John Wiley & Sons, Inc. conducted a survey in February/March 2020 to investigate the dynamic nature of teams in the workplace. Here are a few highlights from their State of Teams report:

  • 86% said effective teamwork is more important to their organization’s success now than it was 5 years ago
  • 63% of respondents feel their job satisfaction would improve if their coworkers were better teammates
  • 51% of people reported working on a team where at least one member collaborated virtually (might be higher now)
  • 98% of managers, directors and executives believe skill development is absolutely worth their team’s time

It is clear that effective teamwork matters now more than ever. Yet many teams have barriers to success such as a lack of communication, interpersonal, and conflict management skills.  Virtual teams have the additional barriers of missing nonverbal clues and the lack of opportunity to interact informally.

Organizations can create a working environment that values and promotes the building blocks of collective teamwork by: 1) identifying and rewarding behaviors that create high-performing teams, and 2) providing training on team skills.

The Personal Development workshop teaches individuals to become better teammates using Patrick Lencioni’s Five Behaviors model.  During this interactive workshop, team members develop behavioral skills they need in order to drive team results during group activities and customized team skill feedback.
