How would you describe your management style?  Do you expect the best from all your team members?  A high achievement manager is the person in the company who achieves the best results by having highly motivated work team members who are committed and engaged.

“High achievement always takes place in the framework of high expectation.” ~ Charles F. Kettering, holder of 186 patents

Here are a few ideas to develop a high-achievement style which will result in greater goal accomplishment for you and your team::

  1. Establish Expectations It is frustrating for you and your team members when they don’t know the “rules of the game”. One of the worst things to hear is “I didn’t know…no one told me”.  Don’t assume everyone knows what is expected. It is important to communicate clear expectations of behavior and performance.
  2. Set High but Achievable Goals – Keep team members focused on the “bottom line” by establishing challenging but achievable goals. Involve team members in the goal setting process for greater commitment.
  3. Coach and Provide FeedbackEncourage your team members to be “the best they can be” by looking for “coachable moments”. Give both positive and corrective feedback based on the expectations established and goals set.
  4. Remove Barriers to Success Are there processes, policies or systems that slow your team members down? Remove roadblocks or streamline processes to make it easier for team members to achieve success.
  5. Hire for Success Look for the characteristics of high achieving employees when you add a new team member. Ask questions to determine if candidates are self-directed and motivated to solve problems and enjoy setting and achieving goals.
“The conventional definition of management is getting work done through people, but real management is developing people through work.” ~ Agha Hasan Abedi, author
